Happy Cheerleader Safety Month!
Did I get your attention? Great! However, this blog has nothing whatsoever to do with cheerleading. I’ve been stumped on what to write this month. Often you can build something on the theme of the month, so I did some googling. (Should've looked this up in February which, it turns out, was apparently Time Management Month - much more in my wheelhouse, but oh well!) So here we are: National Cheerleading Safety month.
Some people are able to plan their regular content months in advance. I tend to wait for inspiration to strike and it usually does. I did actually have multiple ideas this month, but I couldn’t quite flesh them out. As it is my personal goal to send you all something fun at least once a month, I decided to give you the nuggets of inspiration that I didn’t think I were enough for a full post. Maybe a nugget is ultimately all you need. So here we go:
Nugget #1 - Mechanical Pencil
I was writing in my Bullet Journal and trying all sorts of neat pens and doo-dads like they do on Instagram. And I couldn’t find the markers one day so I grabbed one of my good old Pentel mechanical pencils that I’ve used for like 20 years. I was like “Oh yeah, I love writing with these!” At a certain age you know what you like and what works for you. I love my pencils, the blue .7mm ones. I love my Gaiam medium, thick yoga mat and the cork-style blocks. I have used the same hair products, moisturizers, toothpaste, and laundry soap for years. I try things, but I repeatedly come back to these. I encourage you to expand your horizons. I also encourage you to stick with what works. So this was a decent nugget, but probably too close in theme to my last blog Old Year’s Resolutions, which you might want to check out.
Nugget #2 - Coffee Pods
I have a Keurig. I love the simplicity and the tidiness, as well as not having to fill up, dump, and clean out the filter. I also don’t have to program the pot. I also have environmental guilt about the pods, but I have made peace with this by carefully taking apart the pods and emptying them so I can recycle the plastic parts. I don’t do it daily though, so gradually a little pyramid of pods grows on my counter. Then, once a week or so, I’ll stand at the sink for 10 minutes and cut them open, rinse out the coffee, and recycle the pods, which I imagine seems like a lot of work to most. I was doing this process recently though, and decided that for me, this still beats dealing with the filter filling and emptying every day. It’s a pain, but it’s not a daily pain. There’s a lesson in here, I’ll let you sus it out. There is new research on this ‘environmental impact’ thing of coffee pods if you’re interested. Not exactly conclusive, but interesting just the same.
Nugget #3 - Out of Office Messages
Remember these? If you get one now it’s more likely to be “forgive me but I’m doing x, y, z, and I may not reply ASAP.” But it used to be “I’m away for two weeks. Call Mary for help.” We almost never let ourselves be free and off the grid like this. We should try. I didn’t pursue this idea because, well duh, we’ve heard it all before, and I have a huge risk of sounding like Andy Rooney at this point. But, I hadn’t thought about those out of office messages in ages.
In putting out these little nuggets, I’m still quite sure they weren’t enough for a decent full blog post. But, I hope you can take away something from them anyway. I’m off to see what inspiration I can get from Cheerleader Safety.
